It’s tempting to deal with the threat of a hacker stealing your digital data by simply hoping, or assuming, it will never happen to you.

“People assume that they’re exempt from the risks of cybersecurity,” Robert Herjavec, founder and CEO of cybersecurity firm Herjavec Group, and a star of ABC’s “Shark Tank,” tells CNBC.

“Similarly, businesses assume it will never happen to them,” says Herjavec. “It will! Cybersecurity risk is everywhere and no matter the size of your business the data you process and ingest can be exploited for financial gain.”

Malicious or “black hat” hackers steal and then sell information.

“Not to be morbid, but we are all targets,” says Herjavec. “Today’s hackers are after information which they are using as a weapon for political and financial gain. It can be identity information, corporate IP secrets, passwords, payment information — no matter what it is, they’re either putting it up for sale on the deep dark web, holding files for ransom or leveraging the data to influence markets, politics and business.”

“BUSINESSES ASSUME IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO THEM. IT WILL! CYBERSECURITY RISK IS EVERYWHERE.”-Robert Herjavec, founder and CEO of the Herjavec Group

By 2021, the cost of online crime will be $6 trillion annually, up from $3 trillion in 2015, according to a report from Cybersecurity Ventures, a leading market research firm.

The rise of digital currencies like Bitcoin have made it easier for black-hat hackers to demand payment anonymously. That has only made it more possible for them to do harm.

“There is no effective law enforcement for financial cybercrime today,” says Herjavec. “Organizations need to increase their defenses and become more resilient because there is no end state in sight for this growing cybercrime epidemic.

“So long as there is a way for cybercriminals to get paid, with limited risk, attacks will continue.”

Unfortunately, the only way to be safe from cyber crime is to live completely offline. “There is no such thing as perfect security,” says Herjavec.

That said, there are steps you can take to decrease your likelihood of being attacked, the first of which is understanding that you are vulnerable.

Here are the best ways for consumers to minimize that vulnerability, according to Herjavec.

Avoid public wi-fi

“Public wi-fi is exactly that: Public. Don’t do your personal banking or private stuff in a public place,” says Herjavec. In particular, do not complete financial transactions on public wi-fi.

Look for “https://” if you are doing anything financial

If a url begins with “https://” rather than “http://,” then that connection meets the basic “SSL certification” level of encrypted security.

Be suspicious when asked to reveal personal information

“For any website or app, don’t give away key information that you don’t think is relevant,” says Herjavec. For example, “If a camera app asks for financial data, be cautious and don’t download it.”

Exercise extreme caution in opening emails

Don’t open emails or attachments from strangers. “Hackers are also evolving phishing emails to make it seem like they are coming from someone you do know,” says Herjavec. “Don’t input any personal information on links from emails you’re not sure about.”

And even if you recognize the sender, if you think an attachment is suspicious, don’t open it before double-checking with the person the email is supposedly from.

Particularly if your business requires employees to work on their own technology, training employees is critical, says Herjavec.

Set cybersecurity rules and practices

Entrepreneurs “should also put in place proper cyber etiquette from the very beginning so that as the business grows, their cybersecurity program can continue to scale,” says Herjavec.

Grant security clearance conservatively

“For small businesses, make sure only employees who need access to certain data have it, especially if employees are wearing more than one hat,” says Herjavec. “This is a good way to mitigate insider threat risk on smaller teams.”

Website conversions can make your company’s goals a reality, but converting website visitors into leads can be more difficult than expected. We take an in-depth look at the secrets marketers use to increase website conversions which can ultimately lead to an increase in sales for your dealership. Check out 5 tips you can implement on your website today!

Conversion Rate Optimization

Conversion rate optimization is a marketing strategy that utilizes A/B testing to determine which variation performs better in terms of engagement, bounce rate and conversions. This is the best way to determine if your ideas will actually lead to more website conversions rather than just guessing.

Spend Time on Collecting & Analyzing Data

Collecting data on how your website persuades users to act or not to act can give you a lot of insight into your users’ experience and uncover huge wins. By digging into user behavior and collecting feedback you can run less tests and find huge wins. The key to successful CRO (conversion rate optimization) tests is understanding that testing is a measurement, but not a tool. Your data and feedback should be analyzed and then A/B testing is used to confirm your hypothesis which was built from data. Your CRO ideas should not be pulled out of thin air or used just because it worked for someone else.

Look at the big picture when developing your CRO tests, what drives visitors to your website? What persuades them to act by filling out a form or buying a product? Where and why are visitors abandoning your website? This should be the very first step before any change or test is completed.

Become Your Website User

Data is a powerful marketing tool when developing CRO test ideas, but a huge secret that marketers use to uncover the right test for your website user is empathy. By becoming your user, you can empathize with them and see the bigger picture rather than just looking at numbers. Use empathy to identify the pains, successes and goals of your user. To truly understand this, you must first immerse yourself and there are a few strategies that marketers use to do so.

Walk yourself through the whole buying cycle on your website and record your screen. By recording yourself you can see how you would navigate through the website and can identify areas that are confusing or any roadblocks that your user may be experiencing.

Another technique is to record your own users which is a great strategy because your own session may be a little biased. Record and view at least 200 sessions of users converting. Does this surprise you? You want to focus on where users are leaving, right? We recommend 200 sessions of converting because you are more likely to understand what needs to be fixed in these sessions. These committed users can help you to identify where people are stopping or pausing, showing you areas of confusion. Seeing your website through your users’ eyes will help you gain context to what your data is trying to tell you.

Persuasion is Key to Improve Conversions

Now that you have identified your users’ pains continue to focus on the context of the website. Think about the sessions that converted in your recordings. What was their ultimate goal? Your website’s purpose is to persuade the user to convert, so make sure that the information needed to submit a form or buy a product is there.

Next, identify where users are dropping off and provide hooks to encourage the user to complete the goal. You can do so, by referring to the flow graph in Google Analytics. This is a great tool that illustrates where users in your website funnel are dropping off.

Connect the “What” With The “Why”

The next step to increasing conversions is to analyze key pages and one of our favorite tools is a heat map. This eye-opening tool lets you see interaction and helps you connect the “what” and “why”. When analyzing your heat map, ask yourself; Where are my visitors interacting too much? Where do they seem lost?

Another great way to analyze your pages is by simply asking questions. Send your users a survey after they have converted and ask them what their main challenges are. What was the main factor that made them choose you? What are their major concerns? If you offer an incentive like a prize or percentage off the next purchase, make sure to ask them to be brutally honest. Manners do not matter here.

Read your survey responses and find the biggest objections and hooks. Here you can identify the biggest challenges and create a split test to fix these issues.

Build Commitment & Social Proof

The final step that needs to be taken to increase conversions is to build commitment. Give your users a reason to stay on the site and make sure the site isn’t scary. If your data is indicating your users are confused, try testing a simple and easy homepage design. Another way to encourage commitment is by looking at your forms. Is there an excessive number of fields? Think about how you can encourage the user to commit to your site and give them reasons why.

Social proof can also build commitment by helping a user feel comfortable and confident in their session or purchase. Have you been featured in a local newspaper or blog article? What are your customers saying about you? Find items that you can feature on your site that show users that you are a trusted vendor for many users in their area or across the country.

Kill Unnecessary Features & Content

The final step to building commitment is by killing features on your website. Yes, we know you spent a lot of time designing your website, but are there features on the site that no one is interacting with? Check your heat map and kill these features or content, if it doesn’t provide value to your user it is just taking up space.

Conversion rate optimization is a great way to increase your website’s conversion rate, but remember that the initial work needs to be done to uncover huge A/B testing wins. Become your user, find your users’ pains, connect the what with the “why” and look at the bigger picture. By taking action on these tips above you are one step closer to increasing your website conversions, leads and ultimately sales.

A lot of car enthusiasts like to have window tint applied to their windows as an aftermarket addition. A typical issue that many have is bubbling as air gets trapped under the film when it’s applied. It seems impossible to remove them unless you remove the tint itself and start from scratch, hoping to get a better application. However, with a few simple items and some time, you can remove the pockets of air trapped in your car window tint without starting over.
Step 1 – Pick a Sunny Day
In order to be able to work on the car window tint easily and without potentially damaging it, it is important to make the adhesive pliable. Pick a day when there will be a lot of sun with temperatures in at least the mid 70s Fahrenheit. Move your car to an area that gets a lot of sun and let it sit outside for at least two hours. This will allow the adhesive to weaken enough so that you can play around with it. You could use a hair dryer if you cannot find a suitable location or enough sun.
Step 2 – Loosen the Adhesive
A car drenched in sun helps to make the tint film easier to move and replace without losing the sticking quality of the adhesive. However, you will still need the adhesive to weaken its grip a little more. To do this, you want to moisten the car window tint using the fine mist setting on a spray bottle. You do not want to soak the window tint. The cold from the water will interact with the heat from the sun to make the adhesive on the car window tint very malleable.
Step 3 – Attacking the Air Bubbles
Using the safety pin; go to each air bubble and pop it. Make a hole that is very small and do not tear the car window tint. A quick poke through the film at a very straight line will do the trick. Sometimes you will have clusters of air bubbles. In these circumstances you want to pop each bubble. It is possible that the car window tint will dry prior to you finishing, so if this is the case, just moisten the tint again and continue.
Step 4 – Removing the Air Bubbles
The tiny holes serve as a way for the air that is trapped to escape. Because they are so small, when you remove the pockets of air, the car window tint will effectively close these holes. You want to smooth the car window tint out in order to push the air from it. Slide a stiff piece of plastic held at a 45-degree angle over the bubbles with medium pressure and long, smooth, slow strokes. Too much pressure could tear the car window tint so be careful. Moisten the tint as needed but remember to not drench it.

If you own a car or home, it’s pretty likely that you’ve dealt closely with gasoline. Whether you’ve had a spill while fueling up your car at a station or while preparing to mow your lawn, you know how intoxicating the stench of gas can be. When soaked into fabrics such as car upholstery or clothing, the smell can be not only overpowering, but also dangerous.

When simple soap and water doesn’t remove the scent of gasoline, don’t give up and allow yourself to breathe in lingering fumes. Try these simple tricks to remove the odor completely. Each of these solutions is as effective as the others, however you will have to decide which will be best for you depending on the area of the odor as well as your preference in cleaning supplies and products.

Removing Smell from Your Body

If you were recently working with gasoline, you could have residual odor left on you. If the gas smell is on your body, no amount of conditioning a room will help if you’re still standing in it. Luckily you can remove the odor pretty easily so that your friends and family don’t suffer from your smell

First, mix a bit of vanilla with water and dip a rag in the mixture. Then rub or wash areas of your body where the gasoline has spilled. You could also use a mixture of water and vinegar or of water and lemon.

Once you have rubbed and washed it off with a rag you will want to take a shower. This will allow you to get the smell of lemon, vinegar or vanilla off of you.

WARNING: Keep in mind that unlike many DIY solutions you brew up, this one is being applied directly to your skin. When choosing ingredients for your solution, be mindful of things like allergies and skin sensitivities. Also consider any open wounds you may have, as lemon and vinegar can irritate and sting. Vanilla is probably the best mixture to use to avoid any irritation on cuts.

Removing Smell from Your Car

Gasoline spills in the car are unfortunately common, especially when you are transporting gas cans. A healthy spritz of Febreeze is a good first choice to cover up the smell, but it won’t remove the spill.

To remove as much gasoline as possible, try a mixture of baking soda, white vinegar, and hot water. Mix everything in a bowl and use a rag to gently wipe off the seats or rugs in the car that smell.

Removing Smell from Your Carpet

Finally, if the smell of gasoline is lingering in your carpet, you will want to be careful about what you use to clean it up. The best thing to do is to gather two mixing bowls, a few clean rags, hot water, baking soda, a wet/dry vacuum, and vinegar.

Use one rag to soak up any residual liquid in the area where the spill occurred. Then, in one bowl, mix a little hot water with vinegar, and in the other bowl, mix hot water with baking soda into a paste-like consistency.

Apply the vinegar and water solution to the area of the carpet that has the odor on it. Use the vacuum or a rag to soak and clean up the affected area. Then cover the area with the baking soda and water mixture. Use the vacuum or a rag again to wipe off and clean the spot. Then use hot water to clean the area and allow it to dry freely.

Written by Gary Ledoux

For years, the National (then later the International) Autobody Congress and Exposition, better known simply as NACE—later combined with the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service, better known simply as CARS—had been the premier trade show for the collision industry.

Driven by its sponsoring organization, the Automotive Service Association(ASA), the NACE show saw terrific growth in its early years, then fell into a long decline.

There will be no NACE show for 2019. So what happened?

Founding and Growth

Sponsored by the then-premier automotive repair organizations of their time, the Independent Automotive Service Association and the Automotive Service Councils, the first NACE show was held in November 1983 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN. Prior to this time, there had been a number of small, regional shows sponsored by local auto body associations, but this was the first show of its kind on a national scale. The first show proved popular and exceeded expectations.

NACE came along at precisely the right time in the evolution of the industry. In the summer of 1983, a spot survey of shops conducted by the trade media asked how many had attended a national or local trade show. Close to 80 percent had recently been to a trade show, and over 90 percent had been to one in the past two years. Those who did attend said they wanted to look at the latest equipment and keep up on repair techniques and trends. Those who didn’t attend claimed there were no shows in their area, or they just didn’t have time to go—being so busy just to stay afloat. The first show saw 171 exhibitor booths and about 1,500 attendees.

Reaching Its Peak

In the early ‘80s, shops were on a buying frenzy securing new equipment to work on the new unibody cars. A trade show was the ideal place to see the equipment, talk with manufacturer reps and network with other shop owners.

Only two years later, in 1985, NACE attendees exceeded 4,000. In 1986, attendance exceeded 6,200, and by 1988, attendance broke 10,000. The last show of the decade saw more than 15,000 attendees.
The post Will NACE Make a Comeback? first appeared on Winworks Autoshop Software.

Here is a blog post from our partners- 360 Payments, and the owner Steve’s 5 takeaways from the 2018 SEMA Show.

Last week our team participated in the 2018 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Every year over 70,000 automotive aftermarket business professionals gather in Vegas to learn about the latest industry trends, check out new technology, shop for products, and see some truly impressive vehicles on display. We’ve had a booth at the SEMA show for the past few years, and it’s definitely become one of our can’t-miss events. If you weren’t able to make it to Vegas this year, here are the five big takeaways all automotive aftermarket businesses should be aware of, based on one of our favorite seminars by Mark Sengof IHS Markit at AAPEX 2018 (SEMA’s sister show).

1. Don’t Worry About Electric Vehicles – at Least Not Yet

According to Mark and the data analysis team at IHS Markit, despite the growing hype around all-electric vehicles, we’re still many years away from a major shift in the automotive market. The IHS team attributes this slow growth in all-electric vehicles to significant changes in consumer mindset and buying habits that need to take place, changes that won’t happen overnight. Aftermarket companies should focus instead on developing familiarity with hybrids and other all-electric precursors already on the market so that they are ready when the electric shift comes.

2. Don’t Worry About Autonomous Vehicles, Either

The autonomous vehicle market paints a similar picture – despite increased media buzz, the automotive aftermarket is still several decades away from autonomous vehicles making up a significant portion of their customer base. In order for fully autonomous vehicles to go mainstream, the costs and risks associated with the technology have to decrease significantly. However, auto repair shops should focus on developing the skills and technology necessary to competently service these types of vehicles now. Independent repair shops will be fighting an uphill battle to prove to consumers that they are just as skilled as the dealerships when it comes to servicing this next generation of automobile.

3. CUVs and Imports are King

The mix of vehicles on the road today is changing – which in turn is changing the types of vehicles auto repair shops deal with. Crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) are taking the market by storm as sedans lose serious ground to these more versatile alternatives. Imports are also making great strides against domestic makes, and over at least the next seven years most cars sold will be imports. If your technicians are only skilled in servicing domestic makes and models, your shop is going to quickly fall behind

4. New Vehicle Sales are Setting Records but Leveling Off

There’s some great news coming out of the SEMA Show for the automotive aftermarket – American consumers are still setting records year after year for the number of new vehicles purchased. Although the rate of growth is slowing down, more and more vehicles are hitting the road every year. That’s great news for the auto repair industry, especially as those vehicles start to age out of their warranties.

5. America’s Vehicle Population is Aging

In another great bit of news for the automotive aftermarket, Americans are keeping their cars and light trucks on the road longer. Owners of older vehicles will be more likely to seek out independent repair shops as opposed to dealerships, and older vehicles may need more frequent and costly repairs. One word of caution: instead of working on vehicles owned by their second or third owner, you’ll be dealing with vehicles that are on their fourth or fifth. These owners will be less likely to pay big bucks to repair their aging vehicles and may decide to trade up instead.

See You Next Year?

We’re already looking forward to the 2019 SEMA Show! Next year’s event will take place November 5-8 (after Halloween so you’ll have no excuse to miss out), and we will be there. In the meantime, we’re working on fulfilling our goal of becoming the leading credit card processor for the automotive industry. If you want to learn more about what that means, give us a call at 408-295-8360 or drop us a line on our website. We’d love to show your shop how we do things around here.

High traffic volumes and unpredictable weather make Thanksgiving a stressful time to travel. According to the AAA, the number of Thanksgiving travelers will top 54 million, the highest travel volume in over a dozen years. While you can’t control the traffic or the weather, you can make sure that your vehicle is prepared for the trip, says the non-profit Car Care Council.

To minimize stress and avoid holiday road trip mishaps, the Car Care Council recommends checking the following items as part of a thorough pre-trip vehicle check.

Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering, and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

Make sure heaters, defrosters, and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

Check the hoses and belts that can become loose, cracked, brittle, frayed or show signs of excessive wear.

Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads.

Check that the gas cap is not loose, damaged or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

Check out the Car Care Council website and order a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide for the glove box at carcare.org/car-care-guide. This 80-page booklet is available in both English and Spanish.

“If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before heading out for the holidays in order to improve engine performance and increase fuel economy,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “These simple steps will help keep you on the road and get you safely to your destination.”

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For the latest car care news, visit the council’s online media room at http://media.carcare.org. To order a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide, visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

Has this ever happened to you? You jump into the driver’s seat of your car, in a rush to get your kids to school and yourself to work. You turn the key and get ready to zoom away—but as you turn your ignition, nothing happens. A few clicks or stray sputters of your engine, maybe. But other than that? Nothing.

You probably know good and well what’s happened here. It’s a dead battery, and for some drivers, it means an automatic call to your roadside assistance company.

Choosing the Right Jumper Cables

You don’t need many tools to jump a car battery. First, you must find a functioning car to use for the jump-start. Make sure that both car owners are comfortable opening the hood and identifying the battery and battery terminals. Jumper cables are the most popular tool used to jump start cars because they are inexpensive and easy to store. Jumper cables usually come in a variety of lengths, ranging from 10-20 feet. Some people think longer cables are better so that you do not have to move a car with a dead battery. But, while longer cables provide convenience, they may lose power as the longer the cable, the farther the energy has to travel. The gauge of the cable denotes the strength of the cables. The lower the gauge, the thicker the cables and the stronger they are. Gauge six is a standard size for jumper cables.

Safety First

You should consider all safety risks before performing any basic maintenance or repair on your car. First, make sure that small children are in a safe area away from the engine while you are establishing how to jump a dead car battery. Take a moment to read the manual of your car. Some vehicles require extra steps in order to have a successful jump. If you’re unsure of what to do, contact your local Meineke Car Care Center for advice. Assuming that your car will permit a jump, you should be careful to prevent dangerous electric shocks. When you handle the jumper cables, be aware that their function is to transmit electrical current from one car to another. Once one end of the jumper cables is connected to a car, do not touch the metal clamps to anything but the appropriate target. It’s also recommended that you wear a pair of protective glasses in case sparks go flying into the air.

Let’s say for a moment that you successfully get your car battery jumped, and are able to make it to your destination. But then, the next time you try to start your engine, you experience the same problems—clicks, sputters, all the telltale sign of a dead battery.

If your battery “dies” twice in a row like that, it simply means that it didn’t successfully hold its charge the first time. There are several potential causes to consider.

The Causes of a Failed Charge

Some of the most common reasons why a battery won’t hold its charge include:

– You’ve left your lights on—or some other accessory that draws battery power—even when the car hasn’t been running.
– Even while you were driving the car, the battery wasn’t recharging. This is a mechanical problem, and something you’ll want to discuss with the service pros at Meineke.
– You simply didn’t drive the car around for very long once you jumped it; remember, you’ll want to keep the engine running for at least a few minutes to ensure it builds a decent charge. Spending about 20 minutes driving around town is ideal.
– There is some sort of a parasitic electrical drain on the battery—more likely than not caused by a bad alternator.
– The battery is simply very old, and no longer capable of holding a charge for very long. If this is the case, you’ll need to replace it. That’s something we can do for you at Meineke.

These are not the only potential causes of your battery woes, but they represent the most likely scenarios.

Diagnosing the Problem

To determine which of these scenarios you’re dealing with, here are a few troubleshooting tips.

1. First, simply turn on your headlights. If they come on with their normal brightness, your problem is probably a bad starter or poor wiring—not the battery itself. If the lights do not come on at all, or if they’re dimmer than normal, then the problem is more likely with the battery.
2. Next, test the voltage of your battery. To do this, get a voltmeter and connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal. Hopefully, you’ll get a reading of over 12.6 volts, showing a fully charged battery—but if not, there’s definitely an issue with the battery being poorly charged.
3. From there, consider the condition of the battery itself. Does it look obviously corroded or worn out? Is it more than four years old? If so, then the simplest solution may be to have the battery replaced.
4. Finally, consider whether the problem is your alternator. If you detect cracking or fraying in the alternator cables, that’s an obvious sign that something’s off. And if you jump start the car only for the battery to quickly lose its charge and the engine to stall, that’s suggestive of an alternator issue.

These are some effective ways to figure out why your battery won’t hold a charge—but what if it won’t jumpstart at all? If you followed our step-by-step guide and your engine still won’t turn, there could be a number of potential reasons.

If your efforts to jumpstart the battery don’t go anywhere, it’s likely for one of these reasons:

1. First, it may be that the terminals on your car battery need a deep cleaning. We’ll offer some tips for this in just a moment!
2. Your battery may simply be very old, and beyond the point at which it can be repaired—in which case, of course, it will need to be replaced.
3. Finally, note that there could be another mechanical problem somewhere in the vehicle, such as blown fuses or a bad alternator. A Meineke service technician can help diagnose and fix any of these problems.

4. How to Clean a Car Battery

If you have an old battery or a mechanical failing, that’s probably going to require intervention from an automotive specialist. But if the problem is simply that the terminals on your battery need to be cleaned, that’s something you can do yourself.

Here’s what you need to do to make sure your battery terminals are spotless:

1. First and foremost, turn off your engine. While cleaning the terminals is a fairly straightforward DIY project, there is still a slight risk of injury. You can avert this risk simply by making sure you have the engine turned off while you work.

2. Next, loosen the nut holding your negative cable in place; you’ll likely need a wrench for this. Detach the cable from the post. Then, follow the same steps with the positive cable.

3. Take just a moment to visually inspect your car battery. Specifically look for any fissures or cracks. If you see any, that means there’s a problem with your car battery that you probably won’t be able to fix on your own; more likely than not, you’re looking at the need for a battery replacement.

4. You’ll also want to look at the cables and clamps themselves. Again, what you’re looking for is very obvious evidence of wear and tear. If your cables or clamps have big rips or tears, you’ll probably need to have them replaced. These things really can’t be mended.

5. Assuming you don’t see any of these obvious signs of wear and tear, you’ll want to mix your cleaning solution—one tablespoon of baking soda into one cup of water. Mix ‘em up thoroughly, then dip an old toothbrush into the mixture.

6. Use the toothbrush to scrub away any signs of corrosion you see on your battery terminals. Don’t be afraid to really scour thoroughly to get things squeaky clean. You may have to soak your toothbrush in the baking soda mixture a couple of times as you keep scrubbing away.

7. When you finish, use a spray bottle with cool water to rinse off any residue. It is imperative to make sure all baking soda and corrosion is washed away. Then, use an old rag or towel to pat the battery and clamps completely dry.

8. Use a little bit of petroleum jelly to lubricate the terminals.

9. Reattach the cables to their correct terminals.

That’s the basic guide to cleaning your battery terminals—but here’s an alternate approach: If you’re on the go and don’t have access to the above supplies, see if you can find a Coca-Cola or a Pepsi somewhere, and pour it over the terminals. Let it sit for two or three minutes, then rinse your battery clean with cool water. Note: You’ll want to follow the same basic safety steps we outlined above, including turning off your engine and detaching the cables.

How to Prevent Your Battery from Dying

Of course, it’s optimal to keep your battery from dying at all. This isn’t always possible—eventually, every battery dies out—but there are some things you can do to prolong your battery life for as long as possible.

For starters, make sure you make regular battery tests part of your routine maintenance. When you take your vehicle to Meineke for an oil change and tire rotation, also ask them to check the battery life, and to let you know when it’s time to think about a replacement.

Protect your battery from extreme weather. Garage it during the winter or summer, whenever possible—and if it’s not possible, consider an insulated blanker to keep your battery safe.

If you’re going out of town and won’t be driving the car for a few weeks, see if a friend can come rev it up and take it around the block once or twice, ensuring that the battery stays charged.

Of course, you also want to double and triple check to be sure you aren’t leaving lights or appliances on when the vehicle isn’t running—these are major drains on the battery life.

Battery life is something you can extend through regular, preventative maintenance. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment for a battery test, we invite you to reach out to your nearest Meineke service location today. Ask us how we can help you keep your vehicle battery in good working order!

Have you noticed your vehicle shaking lately? Believe it or not, this is a common problem. Most cars shake for a variety of reasons including engine, steering, or brake issues. Your vehicle can also shake and vibrate because of wheel damage, uneven tread wear, tire balance issues, or neglected tire maintenances. We like to start with the simple fixes first. These tire and wheel issues are fast, easy, and affordable to fix!

If your vehicle is vibrating and shaking while you cruise down the road, you might be thinking of a dozen reasons why it is happening. What about wheel damage?

You may not even remember hitting a curb or speeding through a pothole but a variety of unnoticed scenarios can damage your wheels. Wheel damage is a leading cause of cabin vibration in your vehicle. Never ignore a bent wheel. It can cause poor handling leading to traffic accidents and premature wear on your tires.

Improper wheel alignment can cause your vehicle to veer to one side, diminish fuel efficiency, and cause your tires to wear down unevenly. Wheel alignment involves the calibrations of your wheels and your vehicle’s suspension. By adjusting certain angles your mechanic can ensure that your wheels and tires are making correct contact with the road’s surface.

Without correct contact with the road surface, your tires can wear down at different rates. Uneven tire wear can cause your wheels to become unbalanced and unbalanced wheels shake your car! This can be difficult to diagnose but a skilled auto mechanic can find the problem in a flash.

Proper maintenance can prevent most shaking and vibration. Don’t ignore these basic auto and tire maintenances. They will make your drive smoother, prevent expensive auto repairs down the road, and ensure your tires last.

Preventative Tire Maintenances and Warning Signs

Uneven Tread Wear

Tires Out of Round

Unbalanced Tires

Cupping

Cracks and Bulges

If you notice your vehicle shimmying and shaking down the road don’t ignore it. Have your vehicle serviced by our skilled technicians today. In fact, with a little preventative maintenance, you can prevent the shaking altogether. Your tires and wheels are not the only causes of cabin vibrations in your vehicle but it’s a great place to start. Schedule your maintenance with us today!

How Often Should Shop Owners Market Auto Repair Services?

Hey shop owners, Ron Ipach here, sometimes known as Captain Car Count, and welcome to another edition of Car Count Daily. Now on a previous episode, I talked about the best group of people that you could ever market to to boost your car counts, and that is your current clients, the people that already know, love, and trust you. The people that have just given you money are the best group of people to get the money from the next time. It’s the low-hanging fruit, and I want you to really start paying attention to marketing exclusively to them instead of trying to get a new customer in the door to replace them.

It costs a lot of money to replace a lost customer, so we want to make sure that we stay in contact with all of our good customers all the time. So that’s actually what we’re going to be covering today on today’s video. We’re going to be talking about how often do you market to them? And I’m going to give you an answer that you may not be expecting. I’m going to say that you need to market to them every single week.

Now you might be saying, “That’s too much.” Once a week is what I want you to be in front of them so they remember you, so they … because you don’t know when they’re going to need service, right? There’s no way you know exactly the time that they’re thinking about auto repair, so you need to be there when they are thinking about it. So every single week you need to be hitting them with some sort of a marketing message.

When you think of it, the average consumer right now on a daily basis, I’ve seen estimates as high as ten thousand marketing messages every single day that they’re being bombarded with. So don’t think that you’re going to be marketing entirely too much to them by touching them one time per week, four times per month. That’s hardly going to make much of a dent in the universe of how many people are trying to market to them. So four, don’t get carried away and say that, four is entirely too much because chances are they’re not going to see most of the marketing messages.

It’s important we stay in contact with them as often as possible, because when they’re looking for auto repair, that’s when they’re going to notice that you’re there, so I suggest you mail at least twice a month to them. I like mailing a newsletter on the first week of the month, and some sort of a postcard mailer or something on the third week of the month. Then use the power of the new kind of marketing, the electronic marketing, either, and it’s not new, the emails. But send them an email on the second and fourth week, or send them a text message on one of those weeks, or maybe pick up the good old phone and call them.

That’s how often you need to stay in contact with them. You don’t want a week that goes by where they lose sight of you. You need to be there when they’re ready for you, and there’s no way you know when they’re going to be ready for you. So don’t think this is too much. You know, I actually have clients that are marketing to their clients a lot more than that. But on a minimum, once a week you should be marketing to all of your clients, okay?

You either take the information and run with it, because I know it works, or think I’m totally crazy, and I’m marketing entirely too much, but I can tell you, I do know, when you get in the habit of marketing once a week to your current list, your car counts do go up substantially. So take my advice, don’t take my advice, either way I wish you the best of success.

Now before you go, please go down below this video. I’d love to get your questions, your comments, your suggestions. I love to read them, and I respond to every one of them.

Car buyers often purchase automobiles with a standard transmission that has a clutch pedal because they like the power a stick shift provides. However, when a car owner goes to buy a new car, the pedal might disengage earlier or later than the older one. Adjusting a clutch pedal can also prevent slipping. Luckily, testing a clutch pedal to see if you want to make adjustments is easy, so you can skip paying a professional and follow these few steps instead.

Self-Adjusting Clutch

The self-adjusting clutch is one of the two types of clutch-adjustment testing methods, and it is the easier of the two.

Step 1 – Lift Up the Clutch Pedal

With your car engine running and your parking brake engaged, slip one foot beneath the clutch pedal and lift it upward toward you.

Step 2 – Depress the Pedal

Then, test it by depressing the pedal and putting your car in gear. Make note of the distance your clutch has to move downward before you can change gears.

Step 3 – Test the Pedal

To give it a fair test, try putting it into low forward gear, then second forward, and finally third forward. Make note of how much you need to depress the clutch pedal before it disengages the clutch and allows you to put the car into gear without grinding any of the gears. Be sure the clutch pedal doesn’t come up too high before it disengages the clutch.

Manual Clutch Adjustment

Step 1 – Get Into the Proper Position

With your engine turned off and your hand brake engaged, get into a position in the front seat where you will be able to see behind the car’s dashboard on the driver’s side. If necessary, get into position outside the car with the door open. Lower yourself so that your head is partially under the dashboard.

Step 2 – Push the Clutch Pedal and Locate the Hook

With one hand, push the clutch pedal toward the floorboard and hold it there. Next, locate a large hook-like object on the clutch assembly. It should be near the top of the clutch shaft.

Step 3 – Pull the Hook Upward

As you continue to put pressure on the clutch pedal, pull up on the hook-like object until you hear it click once. Then, release your pressure on it.

Step 4 – Test the Clutch

Next, test the clutch. Climb back onto the seat and start the engine. Keeping one foot on the brake pedal, push the clutch pedal downward toward the floor with your foot and adjust your gearshift lever to put your car in gear as you did in the first test. If the clutch pedal isn’t working properly, you can replace it yourself in a few steps, too.

Vallejo, Calif.-In 2007, at 24 years old, Adrian Radu was already an ASE Master-certified technician for BMW and SMOG/ Brake & Lamp certified, but he was really just getting started. That same year, he bought his first business, Milt’s Service Garage, with his business partner, Hal Dorton. Their first steps into ownership would be riddled with adversity as the recession went on to pummel the automotive industry for several years, and also the town of Vallejo, where his shop was located.

“Milt’s was the first shop we bought and it was right when the recession hit,” Radu said. “Vallejo went bankrupt and we almost immediately lost the majority of our clients and a third of the shop’s gross revenue.”

Radu remembers taking the books and cutting them in half and saying, “That’s what I have to work with.”

The partners remained optimistic, though, and began to aggressively separate Milt’s from the other shops in town by analyzing its existing customers’ driving tendencies and offering expert advice on how to increase the longevity of their vehicles — a strong selling point during the recession.

“I noticed that the customers who continued to use us during that time were mostly commuters, driving from Vallejo to San Francisco or Sacramento,” he said. “So I started spending a lot of one-on-one time with each client whenever they came in, showing them what a developed maintenance plan that fit their lifestyle looked like, and how much it could save them in the long run.”

To do that, Radu relied on his shop management system, WinWorks Auto Shop Management Software, and also asked himself what kind of service he could offer that would develop loyalty. What he came up with was the unconventional and time-consuming activity of car shopping for his clients.

“I started with the basic premise that no matter what car the customer bought, it would need to be serviced. Then, through a series of questions, I would determine a client’s driving routine and advise them on the type of car I thought they needed to achieve at least 300,000 miles,” Radu said. “So I sort of went from being just their repair shop to their expert car finder, who worked to find them reasonably priced vehicles that fit their commuter lifestyle and also developed a maintenance plan for them.”

Using the WinWorks software, Radu was able to print out sometimes as much as 20-line maintenance plans, with predictive repairs identified at certain mileage intervals. The maintenance plans allowed his customers to budget for upcoming repairs and services and encouraged them to continue bringing their vehicles to his shop.

“WinWorks is a relatively simple shop management system to train employees to use, and it has helped our business become more efficient, track parts usage, and deliver the most accurate information possible to our customers,” Radu said.

And because all the jobs in the WinWorks system are built by the user, Radu said using the system eliminates the costly practice of not taking into account smaller, shop-charge items (such as brake fluid usage or cotter pin replacement) on an estimate.

“In California, independent shops aren’t allowed to include a shop charge on their repair orders,” Radu said. “WinWorks helps us estimate jobs accurately by working those smaller line items into the estimate beforehand. That way, we’re not losing money, and the customer isn’t surprised by any extra charges.”

He added that the WinWorks system is also linked with CARFAX, so the VIN numbers are extracted into WinWorks automatically using the license plate number, eliminating the human error. Milt’s customers benefit by having each service done at the shop automatically recorded in the CARFAX system. WinWorks software also links with the ordering systems of WORLDPAC, Superior Auto Parts, and Allied Auto Stores – his top three local parts suppliers – which cuts down on misordered parts.

Because he was essentially selling himself out of big-ticket items by finding quality vehicles for his customers, Radu assumed his sales would dip as he got more customers into new cars, but the opposite happened.

“My schedule filled up with maintenance and service work from loyal customers who I’d found a car for, driving 50-plus miles to get it serviced and repaired at my shop,” he said. “They also began to recommend that people use Milt’s, even if it meant a commute.”

By 2010, the books had stabilized, and in 2011, Milt’s, a 10-bay, 7,700-square-foot facility, reached the $1 million in gross revenue mark, Radu said. And with their first shop finally in a comfortable place, Radu and his partner were able to look at expansion. The two now own four shops in Northern California, with Radu directly involved in two locations and Dorton in in all four.

Two of the shops they’ve acquired were already operating and had a client base built up. But when the partners acquired Contra Costa Auto Repair, which Radu is responsible for overseeing, the business had been closed for more than 90 days and had virtually no clientele, Radu said, adding that the ultimate key to managing multiple shops is putting the right people in place.

“I told my service advisor, Keith Sartorious, at our Contra Costa shop, ‘This is going to be your store, treat it like your own,’” Radu said. “I care about the customer’s cars being taken care of and the shop being recommended by people, but I don’t care about being known as the owner. I can’t be two places at once. It comes down to hiring the right people.”

Why Does Auto Shop Management Software Matters? How am I suppose to save time in my auto repair shop and keep customers coming back in? Read below for 6 reasons why auto shop management software matters:

1.) Keep track of your inventory.

Automotive shop software can keep track of all your inventory, you are able to print out an inventory report and really see what you have in your shop’s inventory. You wont have to go through the guesswork of what is in inventory and what is not. We have heard so many stories of shops accidentally selling parts to customers that they don’t actually have in their shop. That takes them more time to go out and make a part run and get the parts they sold. When you can keep track of your parts, it saves you time, in turn saving you money.

2.) Write Work Orders

Most auto shop softwares out there will give you the ability to write work orders and estimates, but all are different. When looking at auto shop softwares, you need to look at both function and ease of use. You can have just function, but if you are spending 10 minutes looking for the print button, it’s not the software for you. As well as if you don’t have the necessary ways to add parts and tasks onto the work order, it’s equally useless. When you find a good balance of function and ease of use, you found a good shop software for you and your business.

3.) Necessary Interfaces

No shop software is going to have all the utilities you need for your shop. The key is to find one that makes a seamless interface with the applications you need. If you use Quickbooks, then you should start looking for a software that interfaces with Quickbooks. When it comes to parts ordering, if you find your self ordering parts from a lot of suppliers online, you should be looking for an auto shop program that gives you the ability to order parts through IAP, NAPA, and so on. Parts and Labor estimators are important too, be sure to have a shop program that can seamlessly interface with parts and labor estimator.

4.) Built-in Time Clock

A built-in Time Clock is another important factor when choosing a shop management program. A place where you techs and clock in and out of jobs and tasks. This will save many hours of manually adding up timesheets. This also helps with your labor rate that when a tech clocks into a job, it starts it and you can find out how much money you are making in real time for the task the tech is clocked into.

5.) Service Tracking

In regards to service tracking, it is best to have a system that can keep track of both customers and vehicles separately and together. Information is power when it comes to running a shop. The more you know, about your customers and vehicles, the better business decisions you can make. When you can make informed decisions, you will see your business grow.

6.) Built-in Marketing

Having some marketing tools built into your program is a huge bonus, for bringing customers back into your shop. There are full blown email marketing programs out there like MailChimp and Constant Contact, they are great tools to build a great looking email. but in order to get the emails to send, you need a shop program that and extract email with ease. If you find a shop program that has the ability to send postcards and text messages that is even better. Find out what works best for your shop, and go with the best ROI (Return on investment).

Anatomy of a ransomware attack: CryptoLocker, CryptoWall, and how to stay safe (Infographic)

By: John Zorabedian

Ransomware, it’s everywhere. We had hoped that the notorious file-encrypting ransomware called CryptoLocker was defeated after law enforcement knocked out its infrastructure last year, but CryptoLocker and its close cousin CryptoWall have come back stronger than ever.

Ransomware is malware that prevents you from using your files or your computer, and then extorts money from you in exchange for a promise to unlock them.

We’d like to show you more about the newest kinds of ransomware, how they work, and what you as an organization or individual can do to stay safe.

Ransomware: a brief history

Ransomware and fake-antivirus have been around for many years, relying on social engineering to trick computer users into paying the cybercriminals, so their phony warnings claim, to avoid fines from police for supposed crimes, or to clean up “viruses” on their computers that don’t actually exist.

But CryptoLocker and CryptoWall – variations of the malware we sometimes call crypto-ransomware or cryptoware – don’t bother with that sort of trickery. The attackers tell victims up-front that their files have been encrypted by the crooks. Unless you pay for the encryption key held by the attackers, the crooks destroy the private encryption key, making it impossible to recover your files.

How it works

A ransomware attack goes through five stages from the time it installs on your computer to the appearance of the ransom warning on your screen. You can download a step-by-step infographic to learn about the stages of an attack, and get tips on staying safe.

For anyone who is at money-conscious, having a car that lasts for hundreds of thousands of miles is a huge money-saver. My last car read over 330,000 miles on the odometer before it

finally passed on into the great junk yard in the sky, and vehicle owners across the world have gotten media attention for getting even over a million miles out of their rides. So if you’re looking to drive a car until it has “hundreds” of thousands of miles on it, you need to make sure to take the following steps:

1) Buy Reliable – If you’re buying a car, or car brand, that is notoriously unreliable, it might be difficult to reach your goal of 200k or more miles. Some cars are just poorly designed, which makes for frequent repairs, and will derail you from your journey to high mileage right when you drive it off the lot. Here is a list of the most reliable car brands, and another of the least reliable car brands to get you started.

2) Follow the Vehicle Maintenance Schedule – Most vehicle owners either don’t know, or don’t care to find out exactly how their car is supposed to be taken care of. The ones who make their cars last longer than their marriages, however, follow their vehicle manufacturer maintenance schedule which can be found either in the vehicle owner’s manual or by doing a simple online search. This is an absolute must for anyone aiming to brag about how many miles their car has.

3) Don’t Ignore Your Car – Another failure of many vehicle owners is their neglect for the signs their car is showing that something may be wrong. If anything sounds, looks, or feels out of the ordinary when you’re driving, it’s imperative that you get it looked at by a professional immediately, not only for good of the vehicle, but for your own safety as well. Turn the radio down occasionally to listen to how the car sounds, keep en eye on the exterior and interior of the car to note any irregularities, and be mindful of how the car feels while driving, and investigate any changes, no matter how slight.

4) Find a Mechanic You Can Trust – Mechanic Advisor’s core mission is to connect people with a local mechanic that they can trust. Developing a relationship with a competent, reputable, and honest mechanic is key for vehicle longevity. No matter how dependable a car may be, normal wear and tear requires replacement work, and maintenance is crucial in long-serving cars. Ask for referrals from friends, check reviews online (Yelp, Angie’s List, Mechanic Advisor), and take time to ask your potential mechanic questions until you feel comfortable working with them.

5) Take Pride In Your Car – Lastly, without pride in your car, there is absolutely no way you’ll make it to 200k miles and up. People whose cars last nearly forever always take great pride in ownership of their car, whether it’s a Bentley or a Honda Civic. Prideful owners keep their car clean, free of major defects, and immaculately well maintained. If the car has any noticeable issues, they can’t get a good night’s sleep until it’s been resolved. They follow the maintenance schedule to a “t” and drive the car like they will own it forever. Most of all, they take pride in being able to brag to people about how their car has over 200,000 miles on it.

This is a PSA of sorts for all the customers out there. Sure, you can do these things, but I don’t know why you would ever want to. Here are the top 10 things customers do that absolutely infuriate auto mechanics.

1. Arguing on price.

Mechanics get a bad rap. A few bad apples out there and all of a sudden people think they’re getting scammed. Well, just because you don’t know what’s under the hood of your car doesn’t mean a mechanic is trying to scam you. Arguing on price really riles up a mechanic since most of them are very trustworthy, honest people. If you really think you’re getting ripped off, just say “Thanks, but I’ll hold off on that for now,” and go somewhere else.

2. Touching their stuff.

Would you go to a doctor’s office, and start picking up their tools and playing with them? An auto shop is like an ER of sorts, and things have to remain in order for there to be productivity. So don’t enter their domain and start touching their stuff. Picking up a mechanic’s tools will create some serious wrath.

3. Calling 1,000 times.

It’ll be done when they said it will be done. Calling over and over won’t make it move faster, and it sure as heck won’t help you win any friends at the auto shop. Usually you’re not the only person who needs their car worked on, so hang tight, and have a little empathy.

4. Customers working on their own cars.

Don’t, just don’t. Unless it’s something that you absolutely know how to do, don’t try to work on your own car. Maybe this doesn’t really frustrate mechanics, but it can definitely make the job tougher. If you screw something up, it could mean paying a lot more money for you, and a lot more frustration for the mechanic. Just take it in to the shop.

5. Waltzing around the shop.

Usually there is a designated area for customers to stand in, which is both for the customers’ safety and to keep the work area only for people who are hyper-aware of what’s going on. Moving around the shop can create a headache for the workers there trying to do their job, and a literal headache for you if you bang your head into an exposed brake rotor.

6. Saying it’s something else.

Bringing your car into a mechanic and then telling them that they’re wrong is one of the strangest and most frustrating things you can do to a mechanic. If you went to a doctor and they told you that you had a sprained ankle and you told them it was broken, they’d probably tell you to get out of their office and enjoy your pain. It doesn’t matter what your “cousin’s boyfriend who’s a mechanic” told you. If he’s a mechanic, then bring it to him, and not somewhere else.

7. Coming in at 4:59 p.m.

Okay, so sometimes this is unavoidable, but everyone just wants to go home at the end of a long day. If you have the opportunity, try and go earlier in the day to avoid bringing your car in right at the end of the day. You probably won’t get it back until the next day anyways, and the mechanic might be upset that they have to stay longer.

8. Explaining how your old mechanic was so great.

Okay, so maybe this one is a little bit over the top. But honestly, talking about how awesome your old mechanic back home was isn’t going to win you any fans. There’s also no positive gain from doing it. Instead, try to establish just as good a relationship with your new mechanic as your old one.

9. Telling them what to do.

This one is in the same vein as telling them what your cousin’s boyfriend said what wrong. It’s one thing to talk shop if you know your stuff, but it’s another to be overbearing and presumptuous. This stuff can really upset a mechanic, so just let them do their job, and I’m sure things will be alright. After all, you brought it to them so that they do the work for you, right?

10. Getting mad over a delay.

Delays happen, and so long as the mechanic lets you know about it, and it’s for a legitimate reason, don’t be angry. I know it can be frustrating for a customer, but mechanics are doing what they can to work on your car as fast as possible. So when you get mad, they might get mad too.

We spend most of our days using computers at work, smartphones when we’re out and about, and tablets and PCs at home. Technology, especially software, has become such an integral part of both work and daily life, it’s hard to remember a world without it. In fact, finding a world without computers might be harder than you think; they have been around now for decades. Take a look at our timeline: are there any big milestones that we didn’t include? Where would your company fit into this history?

Congratulations to the thousands of software companies that have already helped to make history. With the software industry continuing to grow, we think there is a lot of history still to be made!
